The Kano State House of Assembly in north-west Nigeria has dissolved the leadership of the State Assembly’s Service Commission with immediate effect.
The decision came following the adoption of a motion under urgent public importance by Lawan Hussaini, the Majority Leader of the House representing Dala Constituency. Hussaini, speaking to journalists, cited low productivity and frequent absenteeism as key reasons behind the dissolution.
He urged Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to promptly remove the dissolved leadership and appoint new officials to oversee the affairs of the Kano State House of Assembly Service Commission.
According to Hussaini, “They are dissolved under Section 5(1) of the law, which allows the state assembly by a simple majority to dissolve them and ask the governor to remove them.”
While acknowledging exceptions among the leadership, Hussaini stated that the majority fell short of expectations.
The leadership of the Kano State House of Assembly Commission, initially intended to serve for five years, was constituted by the previous administration.
In another development, the Kano House of Assembly has received a report from a Standing Committee regarding a bill for the establishment of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.
Zakariyya Alhassan Ishaq, Chairman of the Committee, outlined the objectives of the bill, emphasising its aim to safeguard the residents of Kano State from the impact of both communicable and non-communicable diseases. This includes acquiring pertinent information, data, clinical samples, and reporting on diseases of public health relevance, among other responsibilities.
Additionally, the Majority Whip and representative of Gabasawa constituency, Zakariyya Nuhu Abdullahi, tabled a motion requesting the construction of a road in his constituency, citing its significant economic benefits.
