The Confederation of African Football (CAF), through its Member Associations division, is set to convene its 54 Member Associations for a vital CAF Safeguarding workshop, focusing specifically on Anti-Player Trafficking.
In 2022, CAF initiated the CAF Safeguarding programme, appointing Safeguarding focal points across its 54 member associations to oversee various aspects, including the safety and security of young African footballers.
In collaboration with Mission 89, an internationally recognised organisation combating the exploitation of young athletes through social and economic transformation programmes, the workshops will take place on Wednesday, March 27 (for English-speaking nations) and Friday, March 29 (for French-speaking nations).
Before the workshop, both CAF and Mission 89 conducted extensive research and monitoring of incidents related to trafficking, exploitation, and abuse of African footballers. The aim is to design a programme equipping member associations with the knowledge and skills necessary to combat this prevalent issue faced by many African players.
Covering the theme of Anti-Player Trafficking, topics during the sessions will include Understanding Player Trafficking, Legal and Ethical Considerations, Safeguarding Protocols, the Role of Stakeholders, Community Engagement, and Awareness, among others.
This marks the second workshop conducted by CAF in collaboration with Mission 89. Last year, they commemorated the International Day of Sports with training programmes for 120 CAF Safeguarding Officers, addressing topics such as safeguarding in football and anti-human trafficking.
Further details about the workshop will be communicated by CAF in due course.
