Much of Ethiopia has been plunged into darkness as the country grapples with a widespread electricity blackout, according to the state-run power company.
Ethiopian Electric Power has attributed the blackout to “issues in our system” but has not provided specific details about the cause. The company announced on its Facebook page that it is currently investigating the root cause of the outage.
The power disruption has affected all regions of the country except for Bahir Dar, a city located in the north-west, and its surrounding areas. The outage commenced around 15:40 local time (12:40 GMT).
However, Ethiopian Electric Power has stated in a separate announcement that efforts to restore power have begun in the capital city, Addis Ababa, as well as some other regions of the country.
