The Mozambican parliament has ratified an extradition agreement with Rwanda, despite apprehensions that it might be wielded against critics of Rwandan President Paul Kagame.
Opposition MPs in Mozambique voted against the treaty, expressing concerns that it could potentially facilitate political persecution.
Similarly, Mozambique’s Bar Association raised objections, citing the same apprehension regarding the extradition agreement.
Rwandan authorities have faced accusations of targeting critics in various African countries, including Mozambique, although Rwanda denies these allegations.
The close relationship between the two nations is made obvious by Rwanda’s deployment of troops in northern Mozambique to aid in the fight against militants.
Additionally, Mozambique is home to several thousand Rwandan refugees who fled the 1994 genocide.
