Kenyan Authorities have postponed the reopening of its schools by one week due to ongoing flooding caused by heavy rains, as flood-related deaths neared 100.
Education Minister Ezekiel Machogu said in a statement late on Sunday that schools across the country have been adversely affected by the floods.
“The devastating effects of the rains in some of the schools are so severe that it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before water-tight measures are put in place,” the minister added.
Schools which were initially scheduled to open for the second term on April 29, will now open on May 6.
Some schools have been converted to temporary shelters for people displaced by the floods.
More than 100 schools were flooded, some with collapsed walls and roofs blown away in different parts of the country. The death toll is likely to increase beyond 100, as the Meteorology Department has warned of more rainfall.
Local media report that more than 130,000 people have been displaced by the floods, with dozens of others reported missing.
The floods in East Africa have displaced nearly 100,000 people in Burundi, and killed at least 150 people in Tanzania.
