The Kano State Assembly has approved a new bill that requires prospective couples to undergo medical tests, including screenings for HIV, Hepatitis, and Sickle Cell Anaemia, before marriage.
The bill was discussed during the plenary session presided over by Speaker Ismail Falgore on Monday in Kano. Following discussions, the bill was read for the third time by Deputy Clerk Nasiru Magaji before receiving approval.
The Majority Leader, Lawan Hussein (NNPP-Dala), officially announced that “any person intending to marry shall first submit themselves for medical examinations.”
He explained that the bill was enacted due to various health concerns in Kano State, particularly the prevalence of HIV, as individuals enter into marriages without undergoing medical screenings. He said that the new law aims to save lives and mitigate the spread of diseases.
