French prosecutors have initiated an investigation into TotalEnergies to determine whether the energy conglomerate could face charges of involuntary manslaughter in connection with a militant assault on its facilities in Mozambique.
The investigation stems from a legal complaint filed by survivors and relatives of individuals who were killed in the attack. They allege that the company failed to safeguard subcontractors and inadequately facilitated evacuations, accusations that TotalEnergies vehemently denies.
The attack, which occurred three years ago, resulted in numerous fatalities when militants raided the town of Palma in northern Mozambique, where TotalEnergies had established a significant gas plant.
