A Ghanaian couple residing in the US, Valerie Owusu and her husband, Emmanuel Addae, have reportedly been handed a 25-year to life prison term for the murder of their son, King Owusu, in 2021.
The Suffolk judge who pronounced the sentence remarked that he could not envision a crime more deserving of the maximum penalty.
During the sentencing, the mother of the deceased proclaimed her love for him saying, “Let no one ever say I did not love my son because I did. I do”.
She fondly recalled her late son as cheerful, noting that he was her sole source of solace during her struggle with post-partum depression. Despite facing imprisonment, she vowed to hold onto the positive memories she shared with her son.
Similarly, her husband, Emmanuel Addae, declared his love for their son and expressed his belief in a reunion in the afterlife.
The convicted couple, both 28 years old, were found guilty in March of second-degree depraved indifference murder for the tragic demise of their son, King Owusu. Prosecutors revealed that the child had been subjected to severe beatings by the couple, who neglected to seek medical assistance in the two days between the assaults and the boy’s passing.
