Nigeria’s Senate has established a seven-member ad hoc committee to investigate the reasons behind the prolonged delay in completing the $18.5 billion Abuja Centenary City project, a decade after its inception.
The decision to form the committee stemmed from a motion introduced by the Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Ashiru Yisa, titled, “Urgent need to revive and complete the stalled Centenary City Project, to realise its economic and development potential.”
During his presentation, Senator Yisa highlighted that the Abuja Centenary Economic City project, launched in 2014 under a public-private partnership, aimed to construct a modern city resembling Dubai to commemorate Nigeria’s centenary amalgamation.
The ad hoc committee has been assigned the responsibility to examine the original public-private partnership agreement and propose any necessary amendments to facilitate the prompt and efficient conclusion of the project within a specified timeframe.
Additionally, the Senate called upon the Federal Government of Nigeria to prioritise the revival of the Centenary City project by extending appropriate support, resolving regulatory challenges, and addressing any other obstacles.
