American music legend Stevie Wonder has been granted Ghanaian citizenship, with Ghana’s president, Akufo-Addo, conferring the honour upon him on Monday, May 13, 2024. Wonder was presented with his Certificate of Citizenship during a special ceremony held for him at Ghana’s Jubilee House.
Stevie Wonder’s decision to acquire Ghanaian citizenship follows his announcement three years ago, expressing a desire for a brighter future amidst political unrest in the US. In 2021, during an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Wonder expressed his admiration for Ghana and his wish for the nation’s progress before considering relocation.
Renowned for hits such as “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” and “I Just Called to Say I Love You,” Stevie Wonder has left an indelible mark on the music industry, influencing numerous genres. With 25 Grammy Awards and 74 nominations since his debut with Motown Records in 1961, his musical legacy is unparalleled.
Born Stevland Hardway Morris in Michigan, Wonder’s musical genius propelled him to become a pioneering figure in the industry.
