On Thursday, the Nigerian Senate unanimously passed the bill establishing the North West Development Commission (NWDC) to tackle the multifaceted challenges confronting the seven states within the geopolitical zone.
The decision came after thorough deliberations and the adoption of the Committee on Special Duties’ report concerning the North West Development Commission.
Championed by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, along with support from 20 other senators representing the North West geopolitical zone, the bill garnered significant backing.
Senator Shehu Lawan Kaka (APC, Borno Central), chairing the committee, initiated the presentation and consideration of the report, seconded by Senator Ireti Kingibe (LP, FCT).
In presenting the report, Senator Kaka emphasised the well-structured and strategically aligned objectives of the bill, designed to drive socio-economic progress in the North West geopolitical zone.
He stressed that the commission’s formation would enhance federal government engagement with the North Western states, addressing the populace’s desires and needs. Senator Kaka urged the Senate to endorse the bill unanimously.
During the voting process, presided over by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau I Jibrin, the bill received unanimous support from the senators. Senator Barau, expressing gratitude for his colleagues’ support, underscored the significance of the bill’s approval.
Upon its establishment, he highlighted the commission’s vital role in tackling the region’s challenges and contributing to national development.
Referring to the North West as the nation’s agricultural hub, Senator Barau emphasised the commission’s mandate to rebuild infrastructure ravaged by Boko Haram insurgents and bandits in the region.
