The Cross River Police Command has confirmed the temporary closure of the Cross River State House of Assembly, following the removal of Honourable Alvert Ayambem as speaker.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Irene Ugbo said the shutdown is to prevent any factional activities and potential disorder.
Police personnel were stationed at the premises under the directive of Police Commissioner CP Gyogon Grimah, after all Assembly staff had been instructed to vacate the premises.
Ayambem’s impeachment over alleged incompetence and financial misappropriation on Wednesday, May 22, sparked concerns over the stability of legislative proceedings in the accompanying days.
Despite the calm atmosphere within the Assembly, security remains stringent to safeguard against any potential disturbances.
As the state awaits further developments, the absence of a new speaker for the 10th Cross River State House of Assembly adds to the increasing uncertainty.
Meanwhile, the whereabouts of the Assembly Mace which disappeared during a heated altercation that followed the Speaker’s impeachment, remain unknown.
