The Lagos State Government has revealed plans to progressively install cameras on all regulated transport vehicles operating in the state.
The head of bus services at the state’s transport authority, Olukemi Amure, disclosed this during a stakeholder meeting about improving transport service in the metropolis.
The move is part of a two-year plan by the government’s Transport Policy to install cameras at bus stops, interchanges, taxi ranks, freight yards, stations and all vehicles, especially the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT).
The deployment of cameras is expected to play a crucial role in supporting the proposed Traffic Control Centre (TCC), reducing incident response time, and enhancing overall traffic management efficiency.
Part of the thrust of the new policy is also the creation of a Lagos Transport Police (LTP) in conjunction with the Nigeria Police Force.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu noted in 2022 that imported BRT buses had short-circuit cameras and that those locally supplied to boost the transport operation did not have inbuilt cameras.
