According to a club official, two Moroccan footballers from the top-flight soccer team Ittihad Tanger have been missing at sea since Saturday. Strong currents caused their small yacht to drift away, and the search for them is still ongoing.
Five club members set out for a cruise off the northern city of Tangier but encountered difficulties when strong currents and heavy winds carried away their yacht while swimming in deep waters.
“Three players were already rescued on Saturday, while the search for the missing Salman Harraq and Abdellatif Akhrif is ongoing,” club deputy president Anass Mrabet told Reuters.
The players rescued disclosed that the players did not have buoys on them when they jumped from the small yacht to swim.
Ittihad Tanger have been playing in the Moroccan top flight since 2015, winning the league title for the first and only time in their history in the 2017-18 season.
