A lady has been severely wounded following an explosion believed to have been caused by an Improvised Explosive Device at the Friday market in Buni Yadi.
News Central’s Umaru Kirawa reports that the explosion occurred during peak hours, causing chaos and panic among shoppers and vendors. Isa Adamu Gujba confirmed to News Central that young girl stepped on a mine that exploded.
Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Goje Mohammed confirmed the incident.
The young girl, along with other victims, were rushed to a hospital in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.
Gujba says the situation has been brought under control; however, the motive behind the attack remains unclear as local authorities have deployed security personnel to the area to manage the incident.
Spokesman of the Sector 2 Joint Task Force Operation Hadin Kai, Captain Muhammad Shehu also confirmed the incident. He added that another IED planted in the market was found and successfully defused by the Army. He explained that the incident was a planted IED and not a suicide bombing incident.
At the height of insurgency in the Northeast, Buni Yadi, located 54 kilometres from Damaturu, the state capital, was the most severely affected local government area in Yobe State.
