Police in Kano have launched an intensive door-to-door operation to recover items stolen during the #EndBadGovernance protest on Thursday.
The protest began peacefully but was taken over by suspected hoodlums who looted shops, homes, and government offices.
They stole furniture, electronics, and more from places like the yet-to-be-opened Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) office. They also damaged street lights and other public property.
The police quickly took action, arresting over 400 suspects and recovering some of the stolen items.
A social media user, Sa’adatu Baba Ahmad, reported that police were actively recovering stolen goods from houses in the Yakasai and Durumin Zungura areas.
On Friday, the Kano Police Command stressed their dedication to bringing those responsible for the chaos to justice.
The protest, part of a larger nationwide demonstration against hardship, devolved into chaos on Thursday when hoodlums began looting. Police spokesperson Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa confirmed that 269 were arrested on Thursday. The suspects were paraded in the state.
News Central reported that following the unrest in the state on Thursday, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf imposed a 24-hour curfew to restore order and ensure public safety. However, the curfew was relaxed for five hours on Friday.
