Amnesty International Nigeria has strongly condemned the raid on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) headquarters in Abuja by armed security agents, believed to be from the Department of State Services (DSS).
The incident took place on Wednesday night, and is viewed by Amnesty International as a deliberate and sinister attempt to intimidate the labour union.
During the raid, the security personnel reportedly searched the NLC’s bookshop and took away materials, claiming they were used to incite and organise the ongoing nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests.
Amnesty International expressed deep concern for the safety of NLC officials and criticised the raid as a violation of the union’s rights.
“Amnesty International strongly condemns the brazen invasion of the headquarters of Nigeria Labour Congress by a contingent of armed security personnel. The chilling raid last night, appears to be part of a sinister and calculated attack designed to intimidate the labour union.
“During the lawless raid, the armed security personnel “ransacked books at the bookshop carrying all the materials into their van claiming that the materials were used to incite and organise the recent protest.”
“We are deeply concerned about the safety of NLC officials,” the organisation wrote on X on Thursday.
