Residents at the Kiteezi landfill in Lusanja Village, where a large heap of garbage collapsed on houses killing 23 people are protesting against Ugandan government’s plan of demolition.
The disaster which occurred on the night of Friday, August 9, left many residents of Lusanja village, Wakiso District devastated. Search and rescue operations have continued.
Residents have been informed by the government that their houses will be demolished to create more space for excavation.
However, this decision has been met with protests by both landlords and tenants of Lusanja village, who are faced with the dilemma of having nowhere to relocate their families.

The police have restricted access to the site of the incident, stating they will collaborate with the Red Cross for recovery efforts. Meanwhile, families of the missing have been requested to identify their loved ones at Mulago Mortuary,while the registration of missing persons is being intensified.
