The Rwanda Atomic Energy Board signed a deal with US company Nano Energy on Wednesday to advance a nuclear energy program that will enable the deployment of small modular and micro reactors in the East African nation.
According to a statement from the Energy Board, the arrangement aims to support the country’s energy requirements in a more sustainable and safe manner.
Fidele Ndahayo, the CEO of the Atomic Energy Board, expressed his country’s interest in participating in developing small modular reactor technologies.
“Small modular reactor technologies are now being developed and Rwanda wishes to be part of the development process. This will put us in a good position to embrace the technology when it will be available on the market.” He said
James Walker, Nano Energy’s chief executive officer, said, “Our signed agreement marks the beginning of a much deeper and longer partnership to develop Rwanda’s enormous potential.”
The government entered into a partnership with Dual Fluid Energy Inc., a Canadian-German nuclear energy company, to work together on creating a prototype nuclear power reactor in Rwanda.
