President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea have signed an agreement on the Gulf of Guinea Pipeline Project following a meeting in Malabo.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale on Thursday, August 15.
The agreement focuses on legislative and regulatory measures for the gas pipeline, its establishment, operation, and the transit of natural gas. It also includes provisions for pipeline ownership and general principles guiding the project.
President Tinubu, on a three-day official visit to Equatorial Guinea, stated that the agreement would unlock new opportunities for gas exploration and employment. He and President Mbasogo discussed issues including job creation, food security, conflict resolution, and fostering peace across Africa.
Tinubu emphasised the need for African nations to resolve conflicts internally, drawing parallels with how Europe and America have managed their disputes. Both leaders agreed to cooperate on security, economic development, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA).
President Mbasogo noted the longstanding and beneficial relationship between the two countries and reaffirmed the importance of deepening this partnership. He also expressed support for Africa’s goal of securing a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, pledging Equatorial Guinea’s collaboration with Nigeria towards this goal.
Several Nigerian government officials, including ministers from various departments such as foreign affairs, defence, petroleum, and youth development, were present at the signing ceremony.
