The National Economic Council (NEC) has issued a deadline of Monday, September 9th, for four states to submit their reports on the establishment of State police in Nigeria. This decision follows a recent meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Oyo State Deputy Governor Adebayo Lawal briefed State House Correspondents on the council’s resolutions, emphasizing the urgency of addressing security challenges through the establishment of State police. The NEC’s move underscores the importance of enhancing security across Nigeria’s regions, including the Northeast, Northcentral, Southwest, Southeast, and South-south.
Lawal noted that while the NEC had previously called for submissions from all states regarding the establishment of State police, four states—Kwara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa—and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had yet to comply. He warned that decisions made by the NEC regarding State police will be binding for these states if they fail to submit their reports by the deadline.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has previously supported the establishment of State police, as recommended by state governors, to enhance national security and address the ongoing insecurity issues across the country.
