Pop star Justin Timberlake has been sentenced to community service after pleading guilty to a reduced charge in his drunk driving case, according to U.S. media reports.
The 43-year-old singer was stopped by police on June 18 in Sag Harbor, located about 100 miles east of New York City, after his BMW was seen running a stop sign and swerving between lanes. Sag Harbor Village Justice Carl Irace sentenced Timberlake to community service and required him to make a public statement following his guilty plea to driving while alcohol-impaired, NBC reported.
The charge includes a fine of between $300 and $500, along with a 90-day suspension of his driver’s license. Timberlake agreed to complete between 25 and 40 hours of community service to resolve the case.
Outside the court, Justin Timberlake expressed remorse for his actions. “I hold myself to a very high standard. This was not that. I could have made a better decision,” he said, advising others not to drive even after one drink. Timberlake, dressed in a dark cardigan and a pearl necklace, added, “I understand what this situation meant for the people of Sag Harbor, and I’m grateful for their understanding.”
Sag Harbor, known for its luxury lifestyle and celebrity summer homes, is where Timberlake was pulled over. The arresting officer noted that Timberlake appeared unfit to drive, although the singer maintained he had only consumed one martini at the American Hotel with friends.
The police report indicated signs of impairment, including bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and poor performance on sobriety tests. However, Timberlake’s lawyer, Edward Burke Jr., emphasised that the singer was respectful and cooperative throughout the incident.
Timberlake’s guilty plea to the amended traffic violation reflects these facts, Burke added.
