The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reported yesterday that floods and heavy rains have displaced nearly 6,000 Sudanese people in just one week, pushing the total number of displaced individuals to over 178,500 since June.
The UN agency detailed that between 1 June and 13 September, 119 incidents of heavy rains, floods, and torrents were recorded, displacing 178,460 people across 15 Sudanese states.
From 5 to 13 September alone, floods displaced approximately 5,940 people and caused the destruction of about 1,349 buildings. The IOM noted that around 44% of those displaced by the recent floods had already been displaced by conflict prior to the onset of the floods.
Sudanese authorities reported on Wednesday that the death toll from the floods and rains has risen to 212.
Sudan’s rainy season, which runs from June to October, has exacerbated the already dire situation, as the country continues to grapple with the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
This conflict has claimed approximately 18,800 lives and displaced nearly 10 million people, according to the United Nations. The ongoing crisis has left millions facing severe food shortages and famine.
