The government of Togo has prohibited the use of cell phones in all public and private primary and secondary schools.
According to a statement released by the Togolese Press Association, the ban went into effect on Monday, September 16, coinciding with the start of the 2024-2025 academic year.
As per the new law, students are not allowed to use their phones on school premises except for emergencies and educational purposes.
This ban encompasses students attending vocational training schools, primary and secondary schools. While recognising concerns about communication and access to information, the government asserts that the ban will foster a better learning environment.
Officials have also emphasised that the ban is aimed at addressing issues like cyberbullying and other harmful online behaviours.
According to the Togolese Press Association, the decision to implement the ban has evoked varied responses from students, parents, and teachers.
