The newly appointed Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), CP Olatunji Disu, has vowed to introduce a proactive, intelligence-driven approach to policing.
Disu emphasised the importance of enhancing the police’s intelligence-gathering capabilities as a primary measure to anticipate and mitigate potential security threats under his command.
Upon taking charge in the FCT, Disu expressed gratitude to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for the responsibility entrusted to him, acknowledging the groundwork laid by his predecessors in maintaining relative peace in Abuja.
He assured that he was determined not only to maintain the current level of security in the region but also to invest more effort into improving security in the territory.
In a stern warning to potential disruptors of the city’s peace, Disu made it clear that his leadership would be defined by a strong stance against all forms of criminality. He pledged an unrelenting approach to safeguarding the community while ensuring that law enforcement remains respectful of the rights of all citizens.
Disu also underlined the importance of strengthening ties with local organisations, community figures, and other key stakeholders. Through these partnerships, he intends to foster trust and implement innovative strategies that address the security challenges faced by residents.
Feedback from the public, he said, would be critical in refining these approaches, with open channels of communication actively encouraged to ensure the effectiveness of his command’s initiatives.
Disu further outlined plans to prioritise community-based policing and to integrate technology into investigative processes. His command, he said, will focus on increasing police visibility and accessibility to promote safety and build trust within the community.
By employing modern technologies, such as data analytics and surveillance systems, Disu aims to improve operational efficiency and responsiveness. He also stressed the importance of continuous officer training to equip them with the latest skills in contemporary policing.
Public engagement, he added, would be a key pillar of his strategy, with town hall meetings and outreach programmes planned to solidify the relationship between the police force and the community.
He called on residents to actively participate in the policing efforts, stating that maintaining safety is a shared responsibility that requires collaboration to create a more secure environment for all.
His words as quoted:
“As I assume this role, I am acutely aware of the security challenges facing the FCT and the foundational work laid by my predecessors to maintain relative peace. I am committed to building upon this groundwork and enhancing our efforts to significantly improve the security situation in our territory,” Disu said.
“To those who seek to disrupt the tranquillity of the FCT, I send a clear and resolute message: my tenure will be marked by a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of crime and criminality. We will not waver in our commitment to safeguarding our community, ensuring that law enforcement is both effective and respectful of the rights of all citizens.
“I also aim to strengthen our partnerships with local organisations, community leaders, and other stakeholders. Together, we will foster trust and collaborate on innovative strategies to address the security concerns that affect our residents.
“Your insights and feedback will be invaluable as we navigate these challenges together, and we will actively encourage feedback from members of the public to refine our approach.
“We will enhance our community policing initiatives to ensure that our officers are more visible and accessible, fostering a sense of safety and trust among residents.
“We will leverage modern technology to aid our policing efforts, utilising tools such as data analytics and surveillance systems to enhance our operational efficiency and response times.
“Continuous training for our officers will be emphasised to ensure they are equipped with the latest techniques and knowledge in modern policing.
“We will actively engage the public through town hall meetings and outreach programs to create a stronger bond between the police and the community.
“To the general public, I urge your support and active participation in our policing efforts. Policing is a collective responsibility, and together, we can create a safer and more secure environment for all.”
