The Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Abdu Aboki, released thirty-seven inmates on medical grounds from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Goron Dutse, Kano, to reduce overcrowding in the state’s custodial centres. The inmates were set free due to extended detention without trial and their poor health conditions.
In her address to the released inmates, Justice Aboki encouraged them to ponder their past actions and refrain from behaviour that could result in their return to incarceration.
She expressed hope that this opportunity would mark a positive turning point in their lives and advised them to exhibit good conduct and avoid any misconduct that could land them back in custody.
Furthermore, the Chief Judge provided ₦10,000 to each released inmate as transportation assistance to facilitate their reintegration into society.
Several legal officials, including the Attorney General of the state, represented by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), representatives from the Legal Aid Council (LAC), and the Chief Registrar of the High Court of Kano State, were present during the release.
Ado Inuwa, the Controller of Corrections for Kano State Command, expressed his appreciation to Justice Aboki for her decision, acknowledging her intervention in alleviating prison congestion and her compassionate gesture towards the inmates who have endured prolonged detention without trial and health challenges.
