Bayer Leverkusen’s Nigerian striker Victor Boniface will be sidelined for Wednesday’s Champions League match against Brest after being involved in a car accident on Sunday.
Boniface did not participate in training on Tuesday and was absent from the flight to France that afternoon.
On Sunday, the 23-year-old shared images and videos on social media depicting a damaged black Mercedes, alongside photos showing his bloodied arm following the incident, which occurred when the car he was in collided with a truck on the autobahn.
Leverkusen’s head coach, Xabi Alonso, described Boniface’s absence as a precautionary measure. He noted, “He has a small wound on his hand and a minor cut on his right foot, but the shock is more significant.”
Alonso further stated that Boniface’s recovery is more a question of days than weeks.
Sporting director Simon Rolfes reassured reporters on Tuesday that while Boniface escaped serious injury, his participation in the match remains uncertain.
This season, Boniface has been in impressive form, scoring seven goals in ten games across all competitions. His likely replacement, Czech forward Patrik Schick, has managed just one goal in eight games this season.
