Adrienne Munju, a 41-year-old Canadian woman, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison by a Lagos High Court for allegedly bringing 35.20 kilograms of Canadian Loud (Cannabis Sativa) into Nigeria.
The trial judge, Justice Deinde Dipeolu, also offered the convict the option of paying a fine of ₦50 million.
Munju was convicted and sentenced after pleading guilty to the two charges brought against her by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The charges against Adrienne Munju alleged that on October 3, 2024, during the inward clearance of in-bound passengers on a KLM Flight at the ‘D’ Arrival Hall of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, she unlawfully imported 35.20 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, also known as ‘Canadian Loud’.
The offence committed by Munju is said to be contrary to Section 20(1}(a) and punishable under Section 20(2) {a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act (NDLEA) Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
During the court proceedings, Munju pleaded guilty to the two-count charge brought against her. After reviewing the facts, the prosecutor urged the court to convict the defendant based on the evidence and her guilty plea.
In response to a plea for mercy by the defendant’s counsel, Chief Benson Ndakara, the court proceeded to convict the defendant.
