The Kebbi State Government has approved a new minimum wage of N75,000 for civil servants. This announcement came during the presentation of the report of the Minimum Wage Committee set up by the Governor, Nasir Idris.
Workers in Kebbi State eagerly awaited the salary increase following the agreement between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Federal Government on a N72,000 minimum wage. The new minimum wage is slightly higher than what the Nigerian Government approved.
The Secretary to the State Government, Yakubu Bala, disclosed that the agreement was reached following extensive discussions between the state executives and the labour union led by Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) president Joe Ajaero.
Following these discussions, both parties agreed to implement the N75,000 minimum wage. After officially enacting the new wage into law, Governor Nasir Idris reiterated his commitment to prioritising the welfare of Kebbi State workers, citing his background as a former labour leader turned governor. He announced that the new minimum wage would come into effect from the October salary, with immediate payment to be disbursed within 72 hours.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, praised Governor Idris while criticising certain governors who have only approved minimal wage increases despite receiving more oil revenue. He emphasised that the union will persist in its efforts until more states endorse appropriate wages for their workers. The NLC leaders sang solidarity songs in appreciation of the governor’s decision on behalf of the state’s workers.
