The United Nations Security Council will meet on Monday to address Israel’s recent strikes on Iran, Switzerland’s UN mission, the council’s current president confirmed on Sunday.
Iran, supported by Algeria, China, and Russia, requested the meeting, condemning Israel’s actions. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, stated in a letter to the Security Council that the Israeli regime’s actions pose a severe threat to global peace and security, destabilising an already volatile region.
Araqchi asserted that Iran reserves the right to respond under the principles of the UN Charter and international law.
Israel reported it carried out pre-dawn airstrikes on Iranian missile factories and other targets following Iran’s October 1 ballistic missile attack. Israeli UN Ambassador Danny Danon dismissed Iran’s complaint, calling it “an attempt to misrepresent our right to self-defence.”
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged restraint from all parties, including in Gaza and Lebanon, to avoid regional escalation and renew diplomatic efforts, his spokesperson said on Saturday.
