The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has announced plans to start local production of 10 essential vehicle spare parts. This initiative aims to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on spare parts imports, which currently cost the country $1 billion annually.
Joseph Osanipin, the Director General of NADDC, made the announcement during the closing ceremony of a two-week training programme for auto engineers and automotive design software in Abuja. The training, which focused on the Midas NFX software for automotive design, was organised in partnership with Midas IT Co. of South Korea and trained 15 participants.
The Director General, represented by Fidelis Achiv, the Director of the Directorate of Research Design and Development, revealed that NADDC is prepared to begin producing spare parts for Nigeria’s 11 million vehicles. The council is also working on increasing the local assembly of vehicle components, aiming to boost Nigeria’s current assembling capacity from less than one percent to 40 percent.
Achiv further stressed the importance of producing just 10 key vehicle parts that Nigeria could manufacture domestically, which would have a huge impact on the economy.
The Managing Director of FAZSAL Nigeria Limited, Abdul-Lawal Zubair, encouraged the participants to apply their knowledge to create innovative designs that would advance Nigeria’s automotive industry.
One of the participants, Lukman, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and said that the training had broadened his thinking. “Midas NFX has taught us how to be creative and how to optimize our designs. It is a great platform for creating new ideas and improving existing ones.”
