The House of Representatives has urged all Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) in Nigeria to raise at least N500 billion to continue their operations.
This call came after a motion was introduced by Ibrahim Isiaka (APC-Ogun) during Wednesday’s plenary session in Abuja.
Isiaka criticised the behaviour of the DisCos, stating that their actions have hindered national progress and amounted to economic sabotage.
According to him, essential services like electricity are being mismanaged at the expense of the people they are meant to serve.
“Despite constant regulatory oversight and demand for accountability by the Committee on Power from these companies, DISCOS remained recalcitrant in operating with impunity and disregard for consumer rights,” Isiaka said.
The lawmaker warned that the current state of affairs posed a threat to the country’s economy and the well-being of its citizens.
The House of Representatives took a firm stance, urging the Federal Ministry of Power to categorise the DisCos as non-state actors and implement immediate measures to curb their harmful practices.
Legislators also called for public education campaigns to inform consumers about their rights and the proper ways to address complaints related to electricity services.
Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, directed the Committee on Power to thoroughly investigate the activities of the DisCos. He emphasised the importance of holding these companies accountable and ensuring fairness and transparency in their operations.
This action by the House reflects rising worries about problems in the power sector, as many Nigerians struggle with unreliable electricity and unfair billing practices.
