The tragic tanker fire in Majia, Jigawa State, has claimed the lives of 209 people, according to an investigation report presented to Governor Umar Namadi.
The investigation committee, led by retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Hafizu Muhammad Inuwa, submitted its findings on the October 14, 2024 incident to the governor on Wednesday.
The committee, which included government officials, security agencies, civil society organisations, and community representatives, was tasked with uncovering the causes of the fire, assessing the damage, and recommending measures to prevent future disasters.
During the presentation, Inuwa revealed the multiple factors that contributed to the devastating fire.
“”The findings revealed that several factors contributed to the fire, including damaged speed bumps and potholes near the scene, night driving, and excessive speed. It was noted that the fire likely ignited due to friction between metallic containers and hard surfaces as victims attempted to scoop spilled fuel,” he said.
He also provided a grim update on the impact of the incident.
“”I am saddened to inform His Excellency that, the incident led to the total loss of two hundred and nine (209) lives. 38 are on admission and 61 discharged. One hundred and sixty-seven (167) families were affected. It was further discovered that, the inferno resulted in the destruction of properties worth millions of naira,” he said.
The report detailed the committee’s engagements with stakeholders, visits to healthcare facilities, and consultations with affected communities. It stressed the urgent need for safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Governor Namadi expressed his appreciation for the committee’s swift and thorough investigation. He assured them that the government would review the report and take prompt action.
