Julian Alvarez and Angel Correa both netted twice as Atletico Madrid cruised to a commanding 6-0 victory over Sparta Prague in Tuesday’s Champions League clash. The dominant performance leaves Atletico with nine points from five games, bolstering their chances in the competition’s new league phase.
The Argentine opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick in the 15th minute before Marcos Llorente doubled the lead just before halftime. Alvarez added his second in the 59th minute with a neat finish after combining with Giuliano Simeone.
Antoine Griezmann made it 4-0 with a clinical strike, and substitute Angel Correa completed the rout with two late goals, capping an evening of relentless attacking football from Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid side.
Speaking after the match, Simeone hailed his team’s intensity and focus, saying, “All goals count. We tried to score as many as possible because it helps with this new format of the Champions League. We are always aware the game has 90 minutes, and we have to play as best we can.”
Sparta Prague’s woes deepened as they managed only one tame effort on target. Goalkeeper Peter Vindahl prevented an even heavier defeat with several key saves, but the Czech champions remain stuck on four points with their hopes of progression dwindling.
Following their impressive away win, Atletico Madrid will host Slovan Bratislava on December 10 as they aim to secure a top-eight finish and direct qualification for the knockout stage.
