Luis Suarez, the former Barcelona and Uruguay striker, has extended his stay at Inter Miami, signing a one-year contract extension with the Major League Soccer (MLS) club. The 37-year-old will play under newly appointed head coach Javier Mascherano next season, the club confirmed.
Suarez has been a standout performer since joining Miami earlier this year, scoring 25 goals in all competitions, including 20 during a record-breaking regular season. Miami set a new points tally record and clinched the Supporters’ Shield for the best regular-season performance, though their campaign ended in disappointment with a first-round playoff exit to Atlanta United.
Expressing his delight at the extension, Suarez said, “I’m very happy, very excited to continue for another year and to be able to enjoy being here with this fan base, which for us is like family. We feel very, very connected with them, and hopefully, next year, we can bring them even more joy.”
Miami’s president of football operations, Raul Sanllehi, praised Suarez for his exceptional contributions both on and off the pitch.
The announcement follows a period of transition for Inter Miami, with Argentina’s Gerardo Martino stepping down as head coach. His replacement, Javier Mascherano, is a familiar figure to Suarez, having been his teammate during their time at Barcelona.
Earlier this year, Suarez retired from international football, ending a storied career with Uruguay that saw him score 69 goals in 143 appearances. His illustrious club career has included successful spells at Ajax, Liverpool, Atletico Madrid, and Barcelona, as well as a stint in Brazil with Grêmio before his move to Miami.
As Suarez looks ahead to his second season in MLS, hopes are high that the veteran forward will continue to inspire the team and its fans in the pursuit of further success.
