Lebanese militant group Hezbollah has declared victory over Israel, marking its first official statement since a truce took effect between the two sides.
In a declaration filled with religious overtones, Hezbollah credited its success to divine support, stating: “Victory from God almighty was the ally of the righteous cause.”
The group affirmed its fighters’ continued readiness to counter “the Israeli enemy’s ambitions and attacks.” However, the statement avoided direct reference to the terms of the truce.
The ceasefire comes after weeks of intense fighting that began on September 23. Israel launched a bombing campaign against Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon and later deployed ground forces in response to repeated cross-border attacks tied to the ongoing Gaza conflict.
During the hostilities, Israel claimed significant achievements, including the killing of Hezbollah’s longtime leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and other senior officials.
Hezbollah, however, portrayed its operations as successful, stating that Israeli forces failed in attempts to seize towns, prevent cross-border strikes, or create a security buffer zone along the border.
The agreement requires Hezbollah to retreat north of the Litani River, about 30 kilometres from Israel’s border, and dismantle its military infrastructure in southern Lebanon.
While Israel’s military campaign caused substantial damage to Hezbollah’s operations, the group’s declaration of victory suggests it aims to maintain its influence and bolster its image in the region.
