Alhassan Yahaya has emerged as the new National President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ).
The former deputy of the union won the election with 436 votes, defeating the outgoing treasurer, Dele Atunbi, who secured 97 votes and Garba Muhammad, who garnered 39 votes.
The election, which took place in Owerri, the capital city of Imo State, saw a total of 602 delegates from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), gather to elect a new leader.
Yahaya’s triumph signifies a new era for the NUJ, with expectations that he will guide the union in enhancing the welfare of journalists and maintaining the tenets of quality journalism.
Comrade Christopher Isiguzo, the outgoing National President of the NUJ, guaranteed a seamless transfer of authority, expressing that he would not meddle in the operations of the new administration.
Yahaya will steer the affairs of the union for the next three years.
