Atalanta tightened the Serie A title race with a commanding 2-0 win over Roma on Monday, moving just one point behind league leaders Napoli.
Goals from Marten De Roon and Nicolo Zaniolo sealed Atalanta’s eighth straight win across all competitions, further solidifying their position as genuine Scudetto contenders. De Roon’s deflected strike in the 69th minute broke the deadlock, and Zaniolo, a former Roma player, added a late header to confirm victory.
Atalanta’s dynamic form has positioned them as Serie A’s highest-scoring team, with Mateo Retegui leading the division’s goal charts. After making history by winning the Europa League last season, Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad is now firmly in the Scudetto conversation.
Claudio Ranieri’s Roma, playing their first home match since his return as manager, were organized but lacked offensive firepower. Early efforts from Leandro Paredes and Manu Kone failed to trouble Atalanta’s defence, leaving Roma just two points above the relegation zone.
Ranieri acknowledged Atalanta’s strength: “They’re ready to fight for the title. This team has everything in place.”
Before the match, Roma players wore “Forza Edo” T-shirts in support of Edoardo Bove, a former Roma academy star who collapsed during Fiorentina’s match against Inter. Bove remains under observation in the hospital, with the suspended game to be rescheduled later in the season.
Atalanta’s challenging schedule continues, with fixtures against AC Milan and Real Madrid in the coming days. Meanwhile, Roma must regroup quickly to stave off relegation fears as Ranieri rebuilds his side.
