Google, Microsoft, TikTok, and other international digital businesses operating in Nigeria paid a total of N2.55 trillion in taxes in the first half of this year, according to the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
Data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) were cited in a statement released by the agency on Tuesday by Mrs. Hadiza Umar, its Director of Corporate Communications & Media Relations.
Google, Microsoft, X, and TikTok were acknowledged by NITDA in particular for adhering to the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries.
The Code provides precise rules for improving internet safety and controlling harmful content. It was jointly released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and NITDA.
While stressing the effects of the regulatory system, NITDA also pointed out that the government has made more money as a result of digital enterprises paying taxes.
According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), foreign digital businesses operating in Nigeria, such as social media platforms and interactive computer service platforms, paid more than N2.55 trillion (roughly $1.5 billion) in taxes in the first half of 2024.
“The substantial rise in revenue highlights how strong regulatory frameworks influence compliance and propel revenue expansion in the digital economy,” NITDA stated.
