President Bola Tinubu has directed the release of funds to settle pension arrears, salary increases, and other benefits owed to retired military personnel.
This decision follows two days of peaceful demonstrations by veterans at the Federal Ministry of Finance.
The Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Muhammed Matawalle, announced the development on Friday, thanking the President for his prompt action in addressing the veterans’ concerns.
Matawalle commended Tinubu’s efforts to ensure the payment of a three-month salary increment and the release of funds for outstanding pensions and entitlements.
According to a statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence, Mr Henshaw Ogubike, military personnel have already started receiving payment alerts for the salary increases.
Matawalle highlighted the President’s dedication to improving the welfare of both serving and retired military personnel, noting that the administration is working diligently to resolve outstanding pension arrears and enhance the living conditions of those who have served the nation.
He also praised the contributions of the Minister of Finance, Mr Wale Edun, for his role in ensuring the disbursement of the funds. Matawalle encouraged military personnel to remain committed to their duties, assuring them of continued government support to bolster morale and tackle the nation’s security challenges.
“Despite initial setbacks, be assured that Mr. President is committed to uplifting our military forces as they confront the challenges of insecurity,” he stated.
Emphasising the military’s vital role in addressing insurgency, terrorism, and other security threats, Matawalle reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the Armed Forces and improving their operational readiness.
