President Bola Tinubu congratulated Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, on his victory in the December 7 general election.
In a telephone conversation with Mahama, Tinubu expressed hope that Mahama’s return to power would enhance stability within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
According to a statement from presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the people of Ghana for their dedication to democracy, as demonstrated by the peaceful and successful conduct of the presidential and parliamentary elections.
He commended Ghanaians for once again showcasing to the world that democracy is the ideal path for achieving political stability, economic growth, social justice, and transparent governance in Africa.
President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s and the region’s commitment to upholding the principles of allowing people to freely choose their leaders, which remains a source of pride for the continent.
The Nigerian leader also lauded the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, for his gracious concession of defeat even before the official announcement by Ghana’s Electoral Commission. Tinubu remarked that Bawumia’s actions underscored Ghana’s strong democratic values.
He noted that Mahama’s return to Jubilee House, following his presidency from 2012 to 2017, reflects the trust Ghanaians have placed in his leadership and vision for the country’s future.
Mahama’s distinguished political career includes serving as Vice President of Ghana from 2009 to 2012, as a Member of Parliament from 1997 to 2009, and in various deputy and ministerial roles between 1998 and 2001.
“President Tinubu renews his steadfast support for deepening the fraternal bonds between Nigeria and Ghana, underpinned by shared history, cultural ties, mutual support and cooperation, Pan-African goals, democracy, the rule of law, and economic integration,” the statement partly read.
Tinubu also expressed gratitude to President Nana Akufo-Addo for his exemplary leadership and significant contributions to Ghana’s development and regional peace.
Looking ahead, Tinubu said he anticipates collaborating with President-elect Mahama’s incoming administration to strengthen bilateral relations across multiple sectors and work towards a brighter future for both nations.
