President Joe Biden stated on Sunday that the United States would consult with “all Syrian groups” about the political transition following the removal of President Bashar al-Assad.
“We will engage with all Syrian groups, including within the process led by the United Nations, to establish a transition away from the Assad regime towards independent, sovereign” Iraq “with a new constitution.”
Biden also stated that now that al-Assad’s regime has been deposed, he should be held accountable for his tenure in Syria.
When asked what should happen to the overthrown president, who is said to have gone to Moscow, Biden responded that “Assad should be held accountable.”
He described al-Assad’s ouster as a “moment of historic opportunity” for Syria.
“The fall of the regime is a fundamental act of justice,” Biden stated from the White House. “It’s a moment of historic opportunity for the long-suffering people of Syria.”
Assad’s alleged exit comes less than two weeks after the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) organisation defied over five decades of Assad family rule with a swift rebel attack that shattered long-frozen frontlines in the country’s civil conflict.
They announced early Sunday that they had entered Damascus and that Assad had gone, sparking cheers across the country and a raid on Assad’s luxury residence.
