The Lagos State Government has discontinued the Red Line Mass Transit Train Service (LRMT) till further notice.
Last week, the train service encountered difficulties after a mechanical issue affected the train service’s morning belt, numerous passengers confirmed last Monday.
The train experienced a mechanical issue, and by the time they reached Mushin, all passengers were told to get off because the train could no longer move, according to a passenger who wished to remain anonymous and boarded the train from Iju.
According to Emmanuel Ajadi, another traveller, station employees sent him back to Agege Train Station last Tuesday, claiming the train was not running.
Only the morning belt will be impacted by the break, according to a brief message released by Red Line operators on the LRMT WhatsApp group the same day, stating that the afternoon belt would continue to operate.
Only the 5:20 and 6:50 p.m. trains from Oyingbo and the 6:40 p.m. train from Agbado will run today, according to the WhatsApp channel that the operator removed last Friday. Both of the promised services for that evening never ran, according to checks.
The operator delivered the following message at 9:19 p.m. on the same Tuesday, confirming that it couldn’t function as promised: “We sincerely apologise for the cancellation of service this evening, which was due to mechanical faults. Please be advised that the train will not be running tomorrow or for some time after that. We are sorry about this circumstance.”
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially opened the Red Line on February 29. It started commercial operations on October 15.
The service began with two morning and two evening peak shuttles, eventually reaching four shuttles daily. As operations on the corridor improve, it plans to upgrade to a four-shuttle service, which is expected to be a big cash cow due to the large number of passengers that transit from Agbado to Oyingbo.
