A Premier League referee, David Coote, has been dismissed by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) following a “thorough investigation” into multiple allegations made against him.
Coote retains the right to appeal the decision.
In a statement issued on Monday, titled “Statement—David Coote,” the PGMOL confirmed the termination of his employment, citing “serious breaches” of his contract, which rendered his position “untenable.”
“David Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract,” the statement read.
“Supporting David Coote remains important to us, and we are committed to ensuring his welfare.”
Allegations and Investigations
The controversy began in early November when Coote was suspended by the PGMOL after a video emerged online, allegedly showing him making derogatory remarks about Liverpool and their former manager, Jürgen Klopp.
The video purportedly referenced Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Burnley in July 2020, a match officiated by Coote. Klopp had criticised Coote’s refereeing decisions following the match, prompting backlash at the time.
The situation further escalated when The Sun published images on November 13 allegedly showing the 42-year-old using a white powder during the European Championship earlier this year.
In response, PGMOL described the allegations as “very serious” and launched an in-depth investigation. UEFA also suspended Coote and initiated its own inquiry into the matter.
Adding to the controversy, the FA opened an investigation into an alleged incident in 2019. Coote was accused of discussing a decision to issue a yellow card prior to a Championship match between Leeds and West Brom.
Coote strongly denied the claim, calling it “false and defamatory,” yet the allegation added to the mounting scrutiny surrounding him.
Unresolved Questions
While Coote’s dismissal concludes PGMOL’s investigation, broader questions about the integrity of football officiating remain unanswered.
The PGMOL reiterated its commitment to Coote’s welfare, acknowledging the sensitive nature of his dismissal.
As Coote denies any wrongdoing, the option to appeal provides a potential avenue for further legal or procedural developments.
