Google revealed its 2024 Year in Search for Nigeria on Tuesday, pointing out that the national grid, Nigeria’s new national anthem, and the U.S. elections were the top three news searches of the year.
Notable people, bands, films, TV shows, and queries that piqued Nigerians’ curiosity are among the most searched topics according to the yearly survey.
Google said that searches for the U.S. elections, the new national anthem, and the national grid topped the news category in Nigeria, indicating a sustained interest in the country’s political and economic situation.
Nigerians’ curiosity about well-known people is reflected in the fact that Bobrisky was the most searched-for trending personality. Artists such as Khaid and Shallipopi experienced a boom in popularity.
I Don’t Care by Boy Spyce was the most popular song, followed by Ozeba and Commas by Ayra Starr. Ogechi, Ozeba, and Chandler Moore’s Omemma were the top songs in the lyrics category.
The findings were discussed by Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, the Communications & Public Affairs Manager for Google West Africa:
“A distinctive perspective on the queries, passions, and discussions that influenced Nigerians’ lives this year is provided by the 2024 Year in Search. These observations show how Search is a useful tool for people to navigate and comprehend their surroundings, from significant cultural events to urgent issues.
Additionally, Nigerians showed a strong interest in entertainment. Among the best films were Damsel, Treasure in the Sky, and A Tribe Called Judah. Supacell, My Demon, and Queen of Tears were among the most popular TV series searches. The Pornstar Martini recipe was the most popular among culinary searches.
Trending enquiries like “How much is a dollar to naira today?” “How can African hair get perfectly defined curls?” and “Who won the U.S. presidential election?” also expressed practical and global concerns. Words like “steeze,” “pet peeves,” and “demure” were often looked up by Nigerians.
The U.S. elections, in which Donald Trump won in November, and President Bola Tinubu’s decision on May 29 to bring back Nigeria’s former national anthem—which had been dropped in 1978—were among the noteworthy events mentioned in the 2024 report.
Frequent power outages also brought attention to the national grid, which collapsed more than ten times in 2024, according to reports.
In order to help consumers better understand the world through search, Google’s Year in Search continues to provide a thorough study of the trends that influenced local and worldwide conversations.
