As the current Joe Biden administration comes to an end, Christopher Wray, the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, has indicated his intention to resign.
This is in anticipation of Donald Trump, the US president-elect, taking office in January 2025.
After his seven-year term, Wray reaffirmed his dedication to upholding the Bureau’s mission while keeping it out of the political sphere.
In a moving speech to FBI staff members at a town hall held at the agency’s headquarters late Wednesday evening, this was stated.
The whole address was taken off the FBI’s website by PUNCH Online on Thursday, while a snippet of the press conference was uploaded to the agency’s X account.
“My focus has been on what’s best for our institution—for the Bureau and the American people we serve—since the day I started this job,” said Wray, in a voice that was both determined and moved.
“This is a difficult decision, but it is necessary to protect the Bureau’s future.”
The FBI managed a period of increasing dangers under Wray’s direction, including the deadly opioid crisis that took lives nationwide and cyberattacks that targeted vital infrastructure.
He highlighted the agency’s accomplishments, pointing to actions that just weeks ago disrupted a mass casualty attack, stopped terrorist plots, and dismantled violent crime networks.
“These difficulties are severe and increasing,” Wray cautioned.
He emphasised how dangers from around the world are always changing, citing China as an adversary and new technology like artificial intelligence that criminals are using as weapons.
His message, nevertheless, continued to emphasise faith in the FBI’s agility and tenacity.
Reflecting on his tenure, Wray praised the 38,000 FBI employees, calling them the “bedrock” of the organization’s achievements.
“We’re not on any one side,” he added, adding that “our strength lies in each other.” We support the Constitution and the American people.
The director’s words served as a sobering reminder of the FBI’s steadfast dedication to independence and integrity in the face of outside pressure.
“The cornerstone of this institution has been and will continue to be doing the right thing, the right way—every time,” Wray said.
According to the press release, Wray leaves behind a history of unwavering dedication and a call to action for the FBI to continue being vigilant in its mission to defend the country as it gets ready for a change in leadership.
“It’s noble work, but our work is never done,” he said. You will keep upholding it together.
