Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has acknowledged that Dan Ashworth‘s unexpected departure as sporting director is “not the ideal situation” but assured fans that the club’s vision remains steadfast and unaffected.
Ashworth’s resignation, which came after just 159 days in the role, was confirmed on Sunday, leaving the club facing questions about stability.
Speaking to the media ahead of United’s Europa League clash against Viktoria Plzeň on Thursday, Amorim expressed gratitude for the support he has received since his appointment on 11 November.
“The first thing I want to say is that, from day one, I’ve felt tremendous support from the ownership, from Omar [Berrada, chief executive], from Dan [Ashworth], and from Jason [Wilcox, technical director],” said Amorim.
“Dan was part of that support, and I felt it from him as well. But this is football, and sometimes these things happen—with players, with coaches, and with staff.
“I understand it’s not the best situation, but what’s important is that we stay on our path. The vision is clear for everyone, and I don’t think this changes just because one person leaves.”
Asked if Ashworth’s departure signals instability within the club, Amorim was unequivocal: “I don’t think so. From the first day, I’ve felt supported by everyone here. One person leaving doesn’t alter the direction of the club.
“Of course, it’s a difficult situation because we’re talking about a professional who supported us and contributed to the team, but the vision remains clear and unchanged.”
Squad and January Transfer Window
Reports suggest Manchester United may need to offload players before making new additions during the January transfer window. Amorim, however, emphasised the importance of focusing on the current squad and long-term development.
“My priority is to evaluate and understand my players,” he said. “We must focus on what we have, including our academy, and maintain a clear profile when bringing in players. It’s about managing every detail.”
Amorim highlighted set-pieces as an area for improvement, noting: “If you look at our team, we’re sometimes smaller compared to others. Every detail counts, so we need to define our profiles and processes clearly before moving into the buying and selling phase.”
Several players signed by Amorim’s predecessor, Erik ten Hag, are still adjusting to life at the club. Meanwhile, Netherlands left-back Tyrell Malacia has recently returned from knee surgery, making his first Premier League start since May 2023.
“We have quality players like Ty, who are internationals, but it takes time to instil our ideas,” Amorim added. “This is a massive club with much to organise. Our focus should be on improving the players we have, strengthening the academy, and then considering transfers.
“There’s a lot to do, so for now, let’s focus on what we can control.”
