The Lagos State Government has announced its renewed focus on creating a cleaner, more sustainable environment while reducing the number of vehicles on its roads.
This was stated by Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the state’s Commissioner for Transportation, during the closing session of the fifth Lagos Real Estate Marketplace Conference and Exhibitions.
Mr Osiyemi explained that the state loses trillions of naira annually due to traffic congestion, which is caused by an overreliance on road transport.
Presently, 90 per cent of travel within Lagos is conducted via roads, while water and rail transport make up just two per cent. He described this imbalance as unsatisfactory and stressed the need to improve other forms of transport.
He said Lagos aims to adopt an intermodal transport system, combining various means of travel, to ease traffic and boost socio-economic activities. He also pointed out that Lagos contributes 30 per cent of Nigeria’s GDP, making it essential for all sectors to function efficiently for the benefit of residents.
At the same event, Ms Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Climate Change and Circular Economy, urged the adoption of effective waste management systems.
She emphasised the importance of recycling, repurposing, and reusing waste, encouraging manufacturers to work with the government on reducing carbon emissions.
Industry leaders at the event also shared ideas for more sustainable practices in real estate and construction. Ms Stella Okengwu, CEO of Winhomes, called for affordable housing options and the increased use of solar energy.
Mr Ndifreke Ikokpu, Co-founder of Systemap, proposed better data access for real estate transactions, while Mr John Oamen, Co-founder of Cutstruct, pushed for digital tools to improve construction efficiency.
The conference demonstrated Lagos State’s determination to adopt forward-thinking solutions for a greener, more efficient city.
