South Korea’s parliament has impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol following his controversial decision to briefly impose martial law. This move marks the beginning of a lengthy process that could lead to the selection of a new leader – one of the country’s most turbulent political episodes in recent years.
The impeachment required a two-thirds majority, with lawmakers voting 204 to 85 in favour. Three members abstained, and eight votes were declared invalid.
A previous attempt to impeach the conservative president had failed last weekend. Until the situation is resolved, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, a Harvard-educated former U.S. ambassador, will assume the role of acting president.
