At least seven people were killed in a terrorist attack on Sunday in central Mali, according to local authorities and a civil society group. The assault occurred in Segue village, located in the Mopti region, where a relative of a cleric and six other men were fatally shot. The diocese of Mopti reported significant property damage as a result of the attack.
The Patriotic Movement for the Unity and Safeguarding of the Bankass Cercle, a civil society organisation, confirmed the death toll had risen to nine, with two additional casualties reported from the nearby village of Sonfounou.
In addition to the deaths, the attackers set fire to local infrastructure, including a clinic, a pharmacy, and an ambulance. The private vehicle of the mayor of Segue was also destroyed, and several motorbikes were stolen.
The situation in Mali remains dire, as the country faces an ongoing security crisis, with factions linked to Al-Qaeda operating in the region since 2012. The volatile north also remains home to a separatist insurgency.
Mali’s government has yet to verify the attack’s toll or provide further details, and it remains challenging to confirm independent reports from the region.
